The feel good seasonal spirit is well and truly in the air and as we edge closer to the end of 2016, it’s important not to let the relaxed atmosphere slip into your outfits.
With events like Christmas functions, general end of year parties and new year’s celebrations taking place, there are sure to be more than a few opportunities to get dressed up. To help you through the busy party season we’ve outlined a number of things you should take into consideration.
Take the weather into consideration
While dressing well and looking good is one thing, practicality is something that should also be considered, especially in the winter. Wearing clothes that let the cold air breeze in will leave you struggling to enjoy any social event. Key items to keep in mind during the winter are scarves, gloves and warm overcoat.
Granted it might sound a little obvious but you’d be surprised to see how few people actually wear one let alone all. If you don’t often wear any of the items mentioned then we recommend going for a neutral colour that will go with most outfits. This will ensure that you get the most wear out of them and can also throw them on without giving too much thought to whether or not they suit the rest of your look.
If you’ve already invested in an overcoat this winter, then it’s most likely already your most worn piece of clothing – and if you haven’t yet bought one then we can assure you there’s still plenty of cold weather ahead to make it a worthwhile purchase. The beauty of many overcoats is that they can work equally well with smart looks and smart-casual looks. This versatility grants you the freedom to wear it for a range of outings, whether you team in up with a suit or a sweater and jeans.
Why battle through the cold when you can stay warm and add an extra bit of character to your look, sounds like a no brainer to us.
Putting together a black-tie outfit
Here’s an absolute essential given the fact that the end of year can bring with it a fair few black-tie events. Now if done correctly, black tie outfits can deliver a level of sophistication unlike any other item of clothing – so if you’re given the chance to wear one you’ll want to get it spot on.
The first thing to keep in mind when putting together your black-tie outfit is to not over complicate it. While there’s nothing wrong with those who opt for a dark blue suit/tuxedo, the elegance that a black tuxedo can bring with it is unparalleled. You should look to team this up with a black hand tied bow tie and a Marcella or pleated front shirt.
While most other suit looks are brightened up with eye catching accessories, the purpose of black-tie attire is for your look to work seamlessly from head to toe. Therefore stick to black socks and a white pocket square. In similar fashion accessories such as your cufflinks and watch should also remain minimalistic and classy.
Tasteful festive additions
Granted, at times the festive mood can get the better of us but that’s no excuse to let it slip into your outfits and detract from your looks. By this we mean incorporating things such as glittery accessories or ghastly seasonal themed items.
If you’re getting dressed up for an outing or event then steer clear of overtly festive clothing. The tasteful addition of items such as Christmas themed socks can work but other items which are likely to be in clear eye sight should be kept at home. If you want to add some festive cheers into your looks then be subtle about it and incorporate some Christmas colours in the form of reds, whites and greens.
So there you have a few pointers to keep you dressed well for a wide array of social gatherings. We hope you enjoy a great end to the year and wish you all the best for 2017.
