The Hemingway Tailors’ team have already crowned the kings of the red carpet for the past awards season – now it’s time for us to see how the women fared in the tailored suit stakes. Unfortunately, the recent awards season wasn’t a particularly great one in terms ofwomen’stailoring.Sadly, few actresses, musicians and singers opted for a tailored suit on the red carpet over an evening gown or a little black dress. Nevertheless, some big names still chose to wear suits during at least one of their red carpet appearances this season. Some suits were daring, others were conventional, while some worked and some didn’t. We recount some of our favourite red carpet tailored women’s suits during the 2014/15 awards season – not all of them were moments of sartorial brilliance, but they were certainly memorable!
Tegan Quin, the Academy Awards
Pop duoTeganandSara are no strangers to tailored suits, often pairing a suit jacket with cute patterned tops, skinny jeans and perhaps some accessories. Tegan and Sara Quin attended the Oscars this year due to their nomination for their collaboration with the Lonely Island on the Lego Movie’s soundtrack – the incredibly infectious ‘Everything Is Awesome’. On the red carpet, Tegan Quin opted for all black attire, including a tailored jacket with leather lapels, accompanied by ankle length tailored trousers and a semi-sheer blouse with leather details. The musician also opted for a tailored jacket during their performance at the ceremony – this time in a rather more outlandish gold and black zebra print, again with black lapels.
Anna Kendrick, Grammy Awards
Actress AnnaKendrickwore a bold plunge cut trouser suit at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Like Tegan Quin, Kendrick opted to stick for a totally black outfit, with slim tailored trousers and a stylish but simple low cut suit – with no shirt underneath, of course. The actress later spoke about how nervous she was about a wardrobe malfunction – she relied on fashion tape to keep her suit in place, and was careful to avoid slouching! Kendrick showed us how to pull off a daring yet classic look with style and grace.
Lorde, Golden Globe Awards
Lorde was invited to the Golden Globe Awards following her performance of ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ for the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack. The singer’s slightly gothic, alternative style meant that she was never going to wear a puffy ball gown on the red carpet. Instead, she wore black, wide cut, high-waisted trousers with a longline tailored blazer. She kept the look on-trend with a black crop top, and also donned plenty of diamonds including an impressive Neil Lane necklace.
Meryl Streep, Academy Awards
Three-time Oscar winner MerylStreep added an edge to her red carpet ensemble with a tailored blazer. Streep wore a V-neck white blouse with a floor-length black velvet skirt. The outfit would have been distinctly average if it wasn’t for the addition of the black tailored suit.
Emma Stone, Screen Actors Guild Awards
EmmaStone would certainly have been nominated for the Best Dressed award this year based on her red carpet appearances. Over the past couple of years, Stone’s sartorial sense (and that of her stylists) has certainly improved. She’s never afraid to take a risk with her outfits, and her suit-dress at the Screen Actors Guild Awards was one of the red carpet highlights of the entire awards season. The ‘tuxedo gown’ was formed of two parts: a structured crepe jacket and a sheer chiffon full-length skirt. Stone had her hair in a low ponytail and wore classic red lipstick to add some traditional Hollywood glamour to this original, unique outfit.
