What’s the difference between made-to-measure and bespoke suits?

27 March 2014

There are few things more satisfying than wearing a tailored suit for the first time. You don’t have to fret about loose collars, long sleeves and shoulder divots. A well-fitted suit can give you an extra boost to your confidence – after all, you only feel as good as you look. If you’re looking at various tailors in Leeds to determine whether you want to invest in a made-to-measure or bespoke suit, it helps if you’re clear about the difference between the two. These terms are often used interchangeably, but making a distinction between the two is important if you’re planning on purchasing such a high quality garment.

Off-the-rack garments

These are the pre-made garments that you’ll find in clothing stores more or less everywhere. They’ll be made in standard sizes based on average proportions. If you have particularly long legs, broad shoulders or short arms, you’ll be well aware of the problems with off-the-rack garments.

Made-to-measure suits

At Hemingway Tailors, we offer a range of made-to-measure suits and shirts. Our tailors will help you choose a style and cut that matches your frame, then take a series of measurements to ensure a perfect fit. For many tailors, that’s where the personalisation ends for made-to-measure garments.  However, we offer further choice in over 1,000 different cloths and linings for your suit. Furthermore, we’ll let you add your initials and your choice of buttonhole colours to the finished suit. Our patterns are adjusted to reflect your measurements, following which we’ll assemble your suit using state-of-the art machines.

Bespoke suits

The ultimate tailored suit is undoubtedly a bespoke suit. At Hemingway Tailors, we’ll talk through your requirements in great depth, making sure your bespoke suit is designed to your precise requirements. You can choose lapel styles, trouser styles – practically every aspect of the design you might wish to change, you can. We’ll let you choose from our collection of over 3,000 fabrics, but if none of them are right for you we can also help you create your very own cloth and lining for your bespoke suit. Hemingway Tailors’ bespoke suits are completely handmade, with our expert tailors putting in around 55 hours of work for each bespoke garment.

Which is right for you?

If you have a physique that is significantly different to the average proportions from which off-the-peg measurements are taken, a bespoke suit will offer much greater comfort, fit and style than a made-to-measure suit. The difference between bespoke and made-to-measure is all about quality. Handmade and hand stitched suits will last longer and look more impressive than machine stitched garments, but that quality and level of customisation comes at a price.
