Five feminine formalwear icons

There are those who believe that the made-to-measure suit is an intrinsically masculine garment – but they’d be wrong. While formalwear icons such as James Bond and Frank Sinatra have helped to make the suit cool in the eyes of men’s fashion, a number of female luminaries have been doing the same where women are concerned. Take a look at Hemingway Tailors’ five feminine formal -wear icons – could you pull off a bespoke suit like any of these five glamorous women?

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was the darling of ‘50s and ‘60s cinema, known for her starring roles and enchanting performances in such classics as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady. Hepburn was a fashion icon recognised as a trendsetter of any number of styles, including her stylish short bob, outsized sunglasses and range of glamorous headwear. Never one to shy away from more formal attire, however, Hepburn looked great in a tailored suit – with the tailoring of the day employing soft lines and playful colours to make the look a more feminine one. The sixties may have had its fair share of male fashion icons, but Audrey Hepburn out-styled them all...

Michelle Obama

A feminine made-to-measure suit can be made to look playful, stylish and fun, but it can also evoke authority, sophistication and competence. Michelle Obama is one of the world’s most powerful women, and to her, an immaculate image is everything. The First Lady never looks anything less than perfect, and her public appearances over the years have revealed an impressive array of tailored suits. Sporting a variety of cuts, colours and fabrics, Obama proves that tailored suits can look feminine, stylish and authoritative all at the same time.

Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates is a successful businesswoman, philanthropist and wife of Bill Gates – one of America’s wealthiest men. With great wealth and responsibility comes the pressure to look good, and Melinda Gates has done so successfully for years. Gates dresses with class and sophistication, managing to appear professional and beautiful alike through her choice of tailored suits. Now aged 49 Gates is incredibly adept at dressing her age – proving that the tailored suit is as stylish in middle age as it is in youth.

Kate Middleton

Another woman perpetually judged based on her public appearances is the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. Dressing well as a royal is no mean feat, but the Duchess always looks immaculate whenever she passes in front of the cameras. Often teaming tailored suit jackets with skirts, Kate is the perfect combination of feminine beauty, propriety and sartorial elegance. One of the world’s most admired public figures is a tailored suit aficionado!

Helen Mirren

There aren’t many people who can legitimately be labelled as national treasures, but Dame Helen Mirren is certainly one of them. The Calendar Girls and The Queen star is now pushing 70, but has long been associated with the image of style, elegance and sophistication. Often seen sporting tailored suit jackets and slacks on screen and in public, Mirren is a master of understated dress and smart / casual attire. If any older ladies are seeking formalwear inspiration, Dame Helen Mirren is the perfect fashion icon.
